The Paris Olympics 2024 marked the end of India’s campaign in the games. Despite India’s success in the Tokyo Olympics, where they secured a total of 6 medals – 1 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze – the performance this time was lackluster. The number of medals won by Indian athletes decreased from the previous year, with only 6 medals being achieved in Paris. Out of the 117 athletes representing India at the Olympics, only five managed to clinch medals.
Notably, Manu Bhakar emerged as a standout performer by securing two medals. She kickstarted India’s medal tally at the Paris Olympics by winning a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol shooting event. Manu then joined forces with Sarabjot Singh to claim a second bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed event, making her the first Indian athlete to achieve this feat in a single Olympics.
The third medal for India was earned in shooting by Swapnil Kusale, who secured the bronze in the 50m rifle shooting category. Another bronze was added to India’s collection in the men’s hockey event. The Indian hockey team triumphed over the Spanish team with a score of 2-1, securing the bronze medal.
In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat contributed to India’s success by winning a bronze in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category, bringing the total medal count to six for India. Despite Vinesh Phogat making it to the finals of the women’s wrestling competition in the 50 kg category, she was disqualified in the last round due to exceeding the weight limit. Vinesh Phogat has taken her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in hopes of being awarded the silver medal, as she had qualified for the semi-finals. If the decision favors Vinesh, the silver medal will be secured for her.
