The Modi government is set to welcome 45 specialists into key roles as joint secretaries, directors, and deputy secretaries across various central ministries. This move aims to introduce fresh talent to enhance the efficiency of governance processes. Traditionally, these positions are held by officers from prestigious services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Forest Service (IFOS), and other Group A services.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently announced 45 positions, including 10 joint secretaries and 35 directors/deputy secretaries, to be filled through lateral entry on a contract basis. This marks the largest lateral recruitment initiative by the government, according to an official statement. The advertisement calls for applications from skilled and motivated Indian nationals interested in contributing to nation-building as joint secretaries or director/deputy secretaries.
These vacancies in various ministries and departments based in New Delhi will be filled on a contract basis for a period of three years (extendable to five years based on performance). Interested candidates can apply through the official website https://www.upsconline.nic.in by September 17. The 10 joint secretary positions span ministries such as Home, Finance, and Steel, while the 35 director/deputy secretary positions include roles in the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Civil Aviation, and Information & Broadcasting, among others.
The government’s latest lateral entry initiative aims to infuse new talent and perspectives into governance. Since 2018, lateral recruitment in the central government has been carried out to appoint individuals with specialized knowledge and expertise for specific roles.
