The Statue Debate at Telangana Secretariat: Political Symbolism vs. Governance Priorities

In the vicinity of the Telangana Secretariat, statues of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao stand near the statue of Rajyanga maker Ambedkar. CM Revanth Reddy has expressed that the absence of a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, is notable and has pledged to have it erected at the Secretariat.

Recent announcements by the three major parties in Telangana regarding the installation of statues in the Secretariat have sparked a competitive atmosphere. BRS has countered by stating that the Congress plans to install a statue of their leader Rajiv at the Telangana Secretariat, while the BJP has taken a passive stance, suggesting they will simply observe the developments. Although the desire to place a statue of former Prime Minister Vajpayee exists, it is not currently under discussion.

The political landscape in Telangana has been revolving around statues for some time now. CM Revanth Reddy’s announcement to install a statue of Rajiv Gandhi in the Secretariat, alongside Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka, was met with a swift reaction from BRS Working President KTR. KTR opposed the installation, citing Rajiv Gandhi’s role in delaying the formation of Telangana state and the sacrifice of numerous martyrs.

In response to the ongoing discussions on statues, Bandi Sanjay criticized the Congress and BRS for engaging in what he termed as “idol politics” to divert attention from pressing issues like the loan waiver. Sanjay also expressed a desire to see a statue of Vajpayee at the Secretariat. BJP MLA Rakesh Reddy expressed surprise at the absence of a Vajpayee statue and suggested the installation of statues honoring other notable figures like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose or Rani Rudramadevi, who contributed significantly to Telangana.

In conclusion, the statements made by the major parties in Telangana regarding the installation of statues at the Secretariat highlight the contentious nature of the political environment, with concerns raised about the prioritization of symbolic gestures over substantive governance.
