The entire executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), led by its president Mohanlal, resigned on Tuesday in response to a series of recent sexual harassment cases. The committee, through a statement, expressed its moral accountability for the reported abuses and anticipated the election of a new committee within the next two months. The statement conveyed a hope for a fresh leadership that could revitalize and fortify the association. It also acknowledged the importance of the highlighted mistakes.
Apart from Mohanlal, prominent members like Jagadish, Jayan Cherthala, Baburaj, Kala bhavan Shajon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joy Mathew, Suresh Krishna, Tini Tom, Ananya, Vinu Mohan, To vino Thomas, Suraya, Anisa, and Jomol also tendered their resignations. Mohanlal, acting as the president, organized an online meeting to address the unprecedented circumstances before deciding to step down. The resignation of AMMA office-bearers was well-received by many actors, particularly women.
Actress Shwetha Menon expressed her belief that a young actor like Prithviraj has the potential to lead the association, stating, “I think he has the capability to serve as the president in the future.” Another veteran actress, Usha, commended AMMA for its overall performance but highlighted the presence of disruptive members. She advocated for a new leadership panel that prioritizes addressing women’s concerns and offers a safe space for female actors to voice their issues openly.
