The Waltair division has introduced specialized teams known as Hill Gangs to manage the challenging rocky terrain and boulders in Ananthagiri Hills. These teams, equipped with advanced safety gear and specialized equipment, have been assigned the responsibility of maintaining tracks and tunnels along the Kothavalasa-Kirandul (KK) line. To efficiently handle the rugged landscape, the Waltair division has deployed these Hill Gangs, aided by drone surveys for accurate monitoring.
A group of over 20 staff members underwent comprehensive training this summer at the National Institute of Mountaineering in Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on techniques essential for navigating difficult terrains. Furthermore, an additional 30 personnel from various departments including engineering, traction, and accident relief are set to undergo similar training in October to enhance the division’s readiness for potential emergencies.
In order to tackle potential disruptions caused by boulders obstructing the tracks, a new relief train with track maintenance materials has been stationed at Shrungaravarapukota station. This train works in conjunction with an existing unit at Araku and is equipped with essential tools like proclain, compressors, and pneumatic breakers, crucial for boulder clearance and track upkeep. Additionally, a newly formed flying squad equipped with hydraulic rerailing equipment and specialized materials has been deployed at Araku. This squad will be on standby to promptly respond to any incidents, ensuring minimal disruption and swift resumption of operations.
To enhance safety and communication, emergency communication sockets have been installed at both ends of all tunnels along the KK line. Retroreflective indicator boards have also been positioned in trolley and man refuges within the tunnels to aid track patrollers during adverse weather conditions. DRM Saurabh Prasad emphasized the importance of these measures in reducing disruptions and expediting service restoration on the critical KK line, crucial for the transportation of iron ores and other vital commodities.
