Cancer is an incurable disease that continues to affect millions of people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the number of cancer patients is on the rise, leading to a concerning increase in cancer-related deaths. In India alone, approximately 1.2 million individuals were diagnosed with cancer in 2019, with a staggering 9.3 lakh cancer patients losing their lives. India ranked second in terms of cancer deaths in Asia that year, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The prevalence of cancer in India encompasses around 32 different types, each carrying its own set of challenges and implications. Among these types, esophageal cancer stands out as one of the rarest and most dangerous forms. Statistics reveal that an alarming 47 thousand individuals are affected by esophageal cancer annually, with 42 thousand succumbing to the disease in our country.

Esophageal cancer originates from tumors that typically develop in the mouth, throat, or esophagus, posing significant health risks. While early detection remains elusive, there are key symptoms to be mindful of. Difficulty swallowing food, persistent sore throat, and unexplained weight loss are common indicators that should not be overlooked. As the disease progresses, digestive issues, chest pain, chronic cough, and changes in voice tone may manifest, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Moreover, esophageal cancer can lead to nausea, fatigue, weakness, and difficulty in eating, often accompanied by constipation or diarrhea. With no existing vaccine for this perilous disease, preventive measures play a crucial role in safeguarding one’s health. Avoiding detrimental habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and obesity is paramount in reducing the risk of developing esophageal cancer. Additionally, refraining from consuming excessively hot beverages like tea and coffee can contribute to overall well-being.
