A devastating flood has struck Vijayawada, brought on by the overflowing Budameru river. Originating in the hills of Mylavaram, this mighty river embarks on its journey as small canals before transforming into Budameru at Velagaleru. It eventually merges into a canal at Vijayawada Ramakrishnapuram and flows onward to join the Kolleru Lake. With 10,000 to 11,000 cusecs of water flowing through its 170-kilometer course, the recent sharp rise in Budameru’s flow has led to catastrophic consequences in Vijayawada.
After heavy rains and floods, Vijayawada found itself in a dire situation, facing a tragedy unlike any seen in decades. The city was submerged, with areas like Singh Nagar, Vambe Colony, and Markandeya Devi Nagar severely impacted. The flood disrupted power supply, leaving residents without electricity and communication. Thousands of houses and people were affected, requiring extensive relief efforts from organizations like Akshaya Patra and the Hotels Association.
Experts attribute the unprecedented flood to the increased flow of the Budameru river, exacerbated by factors like urban encroachment and inefficient diversion works. The impact of Budameru’s rage was felt across Vijayawada, with areas like Ajit Singh Nagar and Auto Nagar bearing the brunt of the floodwaters. As the city grapples with the aftermath, it becomes evident that addressing encroachments and improving flood management are crucial steps to safeguard Vijayawada’s future.
