Netflix Drama Faces Backlash for Altered Hijacker Names, Updates Disclaimer Amid Controversy

After significant controversy surrounding a Netflix drama that depicts the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 by the Pakistan-based terrorist group Harkatul-Mujahideen, the creators, Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava, faced criticism from social media users for altering the names of two hijackers to ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar.’ In response, Netflix India has updated the opening disclaimer of the series to include the real names and code names of the hijackers. Monika Shergill, Netflix India’s Vice President of Content, announced on Tuesday, “For the benefit of audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking, the opening disclaimer has been updated… code names in the series now reflect those used during the event.
