Pedro Almodóvar’s English-language debut, The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, claimed the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday.
Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award for her intense and vulnerable performance as a CEO entangled in a scandalous affair with an intern in Baby Girl. However, Kidman was absent from the ceremony following the passing of her mother.
In a statement read by Baby Girl director Halina Reijn, Kidman expressed her grief: “I arrived in Venice only to learn that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed. I’m in shock, and I need to be with my family. This award is for her… She shaped me, guided me, and made me who I am.”
Kidman added, “I am beyond grateful to say her name in front of all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”
