Spiritualist and founder of Isha Foundation, Sadhguru, has strongly opposed the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to include yoga as a demonstration sport in the 2026 Asian Games. Sadhguru expressed deep concern over this move, stating, “This is a very disappointing decision.” He emphasized that this decision could endanger the essence of yoga, as he believes that yoga is not meant for competition but rather serves as a powerful tool for self-evolution.
In a post on social media platform X, Sadhguru reiterated that yoga is about transcending limitations and exploring deeper dimensions of life, not engaging in competitive activities. He warned against turning yoga into a mere spectacle of competition, stating that it should not become a ridiculous sport.
The recent decision by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to include Yogasana as a demonstration sport in the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, has drawn criticism from Sadhguru and others who share his perspective. The OCA made this decision at its 44th general meeting, sparking a debate on the true essence of yoga and its place in competitive settings.
