On Thursday, North Korea announced that under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un, two types of missiles were successfully tested. One missile was designed to carry a “super-large conventional warhead,” while the other was likely intended for a nuclear warhead. Kim Jong Un directed officials to enhance the country’s military capabilities to defend against threats led by the US.
These tests were seen as allusions to the series of missile launches reportedly conducted by North Korea off its east coast on Wednesday. This continuous display of weapons comes amid escalating tensions with the US and South Korea.
The Korean Central News Agency confirmed that Kim oversaw the testing of the newly developed Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 ballistic missile, equipped with a mock “4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead.” The purpose of the test was to confirm its precision in hitting a target 320 km away, indicating its potential to target locations in South Korea.
Additionally, Kim supervised the launch of an upgraded “strategic” cruise missile, hinting at its capability to carry nuclear warheads. Kim emphasized the importance of strengthening the nuclear arsenal and acquiring superior offensive capabilities in conventional weaponry.
Kim stressed that having robust power is essential to thwart the strategic misjudgments of adversaries.
