Rajiv Memani, the chairman of EY India, has expressed deep regret for not being able to attend the funeral of a 26-year-old employee who tragically passed away due to stress, as stated by her mother. He has vowed to tirelessly work towards creating a more harmonious workplace environment. The employee, Anna Sebastian Perayil, who recently cleared her CA exams in 2023 and had been working at the EY Pune office for four months, passed away in July. Her mother’s letter to Memani highlighted the excessive workload that had taken a toll on Anna physically, emotionally, and mentally.
The government has also intervened to investigate the working conditions at the renowned Big Four accounting firm EY in light of this incident. Memani shared his sorrow on LinkedIn, expressing his profound sadness over the loss and empathizing with the family’s grief, acknowledging the oversight of missing Anna’s funeral, which he described as contrary to their organizational values.
In response to public scrutiny on social media regarding EY’s practices, Memani assured that the well-being of their employees is his top priority, and he personally pledges to advocate for this cause. Meanwhile, Deloitte, a prominent global tax consultancy, has initiated a three-member committee led by Romal Shetty, the CEO of Deloitte South Asia, to review and enhance their practices, policies, and processes related to employee welfare. Deloitte’s proactive measures include the appointment of a chief happiness officer and a commitment to address any misconduct within the organization.
