Authorities in the Maredumilli agency area of Alluri Sitarama Raju district are stepping up safety protocols across tourism centres in both public and private sectors. This comes in response to the recent tragic death of two medical students, which has brought the need for improved safety to the forefront. A growing number of tourists, particularly young people, are flocking to Maredumilli from various parts of the former twin districts of Godavari. The region’s breathtaking landscapes, including thick forests, deep valleys, high hill ranges, waterfalls, and scenic water bodies, make it a popular destination for adventure seekers.

Visitors particularly enjoy the long, scenic drives through the dense vegetation that lines the roads, as well as the opportunities for trekking, wildlife viewing, and soaking in the natural beauty of the area. Both public and private sectors offer resort accommodations, while the forest department manages ecotourism projects like Jala Tarangini, where tourists can relish the stunning waterfalls.

A notable attraction in Maredumilli is “Bongu Chicken,” a local delicacy more commonly known as bamboo chicken. This dish is not only a favorite among tourists but also serves as a livelihood for many tribals in the region. Alongside traditional local cuisine, branded eateries are also making their way into the area, offering air-conditioned accommodations and a variety of food similar to those found in the plains.

However, the unfortunate deaths of the two medical students have prompted swift action from local authorities. Various departments, including the forest, revenue, police, and tribal welfare, are now reviewing safety measures in all tourism centres. Rajahmundry Circle Chief Conservator of Forests, Y. Srinivasa Reddy, has stated that an inter-departmental meeting will be convened to enhance safety standards in the region to ensure that tourists can enjoy their visit safely.

Meanwhile, a search operation is ongoing for a missing medical student who was swept away at the Jala Tarangini waterfalls. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are using drones in their efforts to locate the missing student. On the day of the incident, nearly 50 tourists had gathered at the waterfalls, and forest officials quickly alerted them when a surge of muddy water, nearly five meters high, began rushing towards them. Most managed to escape to safety, but five medicos remained at the spot, with tragic consequences.

The forest department has since vowed to improve safety amenities at these popular tourist spots, hoping to prevent future accidents while maintaining the area’s appeal as a top destination for nature lovers.
