The much-anticipated film directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan is set in 2001 rural India, and follows the story of two brides who accidentally get swapped during a train journey. One of the brides, Ranta, portrayed by actor Jaya, breaks societal expectations to pursue her dream of becoming an organic farmer.
Ranta, in an interview with PTI, expressed her joy at the film’s selection, sharing her overwhelming excitement. “We were hoping for the film’s selection. Today, when this news came out, I was so happy and I don’t know what to say right now. I’m so overwhelmed,” she said, reflecting on the emotional moment.
Hailing from Shimla, Ranta shared how the film’s shoot became one of the most memorable experiences of her life, as it brought her close to new friendships and meaningful connections. “The best part is the kind of friends I have made during this film. I have cherished those moments a lot. We still meet, we still talk to each other, and I think it’s a beautiful feeling just to be able to connect with so many beautiful people. That’s the most beautiful thing,” she added.
The actor revealed a personal connection to her character’s aspirations of becoming a farmer, as she herself comes from a farming family in Shimla. “I have apple orchards back home,” she shared, explaining how she easily connected with the dream of becoming an organic farmer, much like her character in the film.
The film not only explores a heartwarming narrative of identity and societal expectations, but it also highlights themes of agriculture and rural empowerment, making it a unique and meaningful addition to contemporary Indian cinema.
