Farmers in Punjab are rising in protest against both the central and state governments, voicing their frustration over unmet demands and political interference that they claim is driving a wedge between their ranks. The situation has escalated into clashes among farmers, prompting leaders to call for unity to strengthen their struggle.

In Amritsar, farmers protested vigorously, leading to the implementation of a Rail Roko (train blockade) to push for their demands. Numerous trains were halted as farmers occupied railway tracks and platforms, demonstrating their resolve to be heard. At Muktsar railway station, tensions flared as farmers demanded urgent action from authorities, expressing their dissatisfaction with the lack of support for their livelihoods.

Demands for Justice and Support

The protests are not only about current grievances but also seek justice for the families affected by the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, where several farmers lost their lives. Sarwansingh Pandher, a prominent farmer leader, emphasized the need for justice for the victims’ families and urged the government to implement a Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee law to ensure fair prices for their crops.

As farmers in Punjab struggle with the non-purchase of paddy crops, the demand for MSP has gained significant traction. They argue that without a guaranteed price, their livelihoods are at risk, and many feel abandoned by the political establishment.

Solidarity and Mobilization

In addition to the protests in Amritsar, members of the Kisan Mazdoor Hitkari Sabha organized a march from the grain market to the railway station in Bengaluru, Jalandhar district. Their demonstration targeted the Jalandhar-Jammu rail section, further showcasing the widespread unrest among farmers. The Pathankot-bound goods train was also blocked at Mukerian station, resulting in significant disruptions to train services in the area.

With growing discontent, farmers are increasingly vocal about their grievances and are calling for solidarity among themselves. “If we do not come together, our struggle will be weakened,” leaders have warned, urging all farmers to unite against what they see as systemic failures by both the central and state governments.

Looking Ahead

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the governments will respond to the mounting pressure from the farming community. The call for unity among farmers highlights the urgent need for dialogue and resolution, as they strive for justice and recognition of their rights.

With the ongoing protests, farmers are not only standing up for their immediate needs but are also laying the groundwork for a more coordinated and powerful movement aimed at safeguarding their livelihoods and rights.
