The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 kicked off with an exciting clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Group A. Pakistan made a strong statement by defeating Sri Lanka by 31 runs, marking a successful start to their campaign. Batting first, Pakistan scored 116 runs before being bowled out in 20 overs. In response, Sri Lanka struggled, managing only 85 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.

Pakistan’s Batting Performance

After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first. However, the innings got off to a shaky start, with opener Gul Feroza scoring just 2 runs and her partner Muniba Ali contributing only 11 runs. Sidra Amin also struggled, dismissed for 12 runs, leaving Pakistan at a precarious 32 runs for 3 wickets.

As wickets continued to tumble, it appeared that Pakistan might struggle to reach even 100 runs. However, captain Fatima Sana turned the tide with a remarkable innings, scoring 30 runs off 20 balls, including three fours and a six. Her late flourish helped Pakistan post a competitive total.

Sri Lanka’s Udesika Prabodhini and Sugandika Kumari each claimed three wickets, putting Pakistan under pressure throughout their innings.

Sri Lanka’s Struggles with the Bat

Chasing a target of 117 runs, Sri Lanka faced early setbacks, losing their captain Chamari Atapattu for just 6 runs in the third over. The team fell further behind as Vishmi Gunaratne managed only 20 runs before being dismissed. The only bright spot for Sri Lanka was Neelakshika Silva, who scored 22 runs, but it was insufficient to mount a challenge.

Pakistan’s Sadia Iqbal emerged as the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets and stifling Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, which crumbled under pressure.

Looking Ahead

With this impressive victory, Pakistan has gained crucial momentum ahead of their upcoming match against India on October 6. Fans are eagerly awaiting this high-stakes encounter, as the rivalry between the two teams promises an electrifying showdown.

Captain Fatima Sana’s performance not only earned her the Player of the Match award but also boosted the team’s morale significantly as they prepare for one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.
