The whole village was abuzz with the news that a huge amount of silver coins and jewelry had been found while digging in the soil near Greater Noida. As excitement spread, so did the frenzy to claim the newfound wealth. Unfortunately, by the time authorities arrived, much of the loot had already been taken.

Discovery of Treasure

The unexpected treasure was discovered in Rajpur Kala village, located under the jurisdiction of Dankaur police station. The villagers were engaged in excavation work for soil to fill a house under construction when they stumbled upon the valuable hoard. Reports indicate that during this excavation, a significant amount of silver coins and jewelry came to light, igniting a rush among the locals.

The Looting Frenzy

According to villagers, the treasure was discovered on the night of October 6, when they were digging in the farm of village head Kailash. Soil was being transported via trolleys, and the following day, scattered coins were found on the road, prompting a deeper search. As more coins and jewelry were uncovered, the excitement escalated, leading to a chaotic scramble among villagers to collect as much as they could.

Authorities Respond

Upon receiving news of the treasure, a team from the Archaeology Department arrived at Rajpur Kala village to investigate. They reported that the metal artifacts appeared to date back to both the Mughal and British periods. Initial findings suggest that villagers may have uncovered approximately 20 kg of silver coins and ornaments. However, by this time, many items had already been taken by eager treasure hunters.

Archaeological Significance

The situation has raised concerns among archaeologists and historians alike. The artifacts could provide valuable insights into the region’s past. Dankaur is steeped in history; it is believed to date back to the Mahabharata era, with local legends connecting it to notable figures such as Ekalavya and Ravana.

Local Legends

According to village lore, Bisrakh, located nearby, is believed to be the birthplace of Ravana’s cousin, Gautam. Such stories underscore the historical significance of the area, making the discovery of these artifacts all the more intriguing.

Conclusion

As the Archaeology Department continues its investigation, the villagers are left to reflect on the chaos that ensued over a moment of fortune. While the treasure hunt has highlighted the rich history of the region, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in preserving historical artifacts in the face of human greed. This incident is not just about lost coins and jewelry; it’s a chapter in the ongoing story of Greater Noida’s vibrant past.
