NSG Celebrates 40 Years: Major Policy Shift to Focus on Counter-Terrorism Operations

The National Security Guard (NSG) is celebrating its 40th Foundation Day, and in light of this milestone, the Indian government has taken a crucial decision regarding the deployment of its elite commandos. It has been announced that NSG personnel will no longer be assigned VVIP security duties, allowing them to focus solely on their primary responsibilities of counter-terrorism operations and counter-hijacking missions.

Shift in Responsibility

Effective next month, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will assume responsibility for providing security to VVIPs. This decision was made after it was observed that the NSG commandos were overburdened with VIP security duties, which detracted from their readiness and effectiveness for their primary counter-terrorism tasks. Currently, nine high-profile leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, receive security from NSG commandos. However, from next month, they will be protected by the CRPF’s VIP Security Wing.

Focus on Counter-Terrorism

The NSG, often referred to as “black cats,” will now limit its operations strictly to counter-terrorism and counter-hijacking missions. A special battalion within the CRPF has been trained to handle VVIP security, ensuring that all necessary precautions and measures are taken to protect high-profile individuals effectively. This strategic decision aims to streamline operations and improve the overall security framework in India.

Current Security Landscape

Among the leaders currently under NSG protection are prominent figures such as Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as regional leaders like Farooq Abdullah and Mayawati. Historically, in 2020, security for Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi was also transitioned from NSG to CRPF, setting a precedent for this policy change.

The NSG’s commitment to combating terrorism remains steadfast, with commandos likely to focus on vital operations, including the protection of significant locations such as the Ayodhya Ram Temple and other temples across South India.

Conclusion

As the NSG celebrates four decades of service, this pivotal shift in operational focus aims to enhance the effectiveness of India’s counter-terrorism efforts while ensuring that VVIP security remains uncompromised. With the CRPF stepping in, NSG commandos can dedicate their skills and training to the critical tasks for which they were originally established.
