The Mavullamma Ammavari Mala Dharana Deeksha, a revered spiritual tradition, celebrates its 17th anniversary this year. Initiated by the then head priest of the temple, Maddirala Ramalingeswara Sharma, with just 11 devotees, this powerful ritual has flourished over the years, attracting an increasing number of participants each year.

Located in Bhimavaram district of West Godavari, the temple dedicated to Ilavelpu Mavullamma, the village deity, is a beacon of hope and fulfillment for many devotees. Known for her golden radiance, locals believe that visiting Mavullamma and voicing their wishes leads to their immediate fulfillment. This belief draws devotees not only from the Telugu states but also from other regions and even countries, eager to seek her blessings. Once their desires are realized, devotees often express gratitude through monetary offerings and special poojas held daily.

The Mala Dharana Deeksha is a profound practice where devotees commit to a 41-day initiation period. During this time, they don saffron-colored garments and adorn themselves with coral necklaces. Sandalwood and saffron are applied as vermilion, symbolizing purity and devotion. Each day, they measure the goddess, reinforcing their spiritual commitment. Scholars highlight the importance of conquering the Arishadvargas, the six internal enemies that hinder personal growth—Kama (desire), Krodha (anger), Lobha (greed), Moha (attachment), Mada (pride), and Matsarya (jealousy). By participating in this ritual, devotees believe they can overcome these challenges and foster inner strength and discipline.

Each morning, devotees arrive at the temple at dawn to offer special pooja to Mavullamma, engaging in bhajans and hymns that resonate throughout the temple grounds. After completing their daily routines, they return in the evening for another round of special pooja, adhering to a disciplined lifestyle that includes bathing, eating only one meal, avoiding addictions, maintaining a peaceful demeanor, and treating women with utmost respect.

The tradition of Mavullamma Ammavari Mala Dharana Deeksha continues to thrive under the guidance of the current chief priest, Maddirala Mallikarjuna Sharma. Each year, the ritual grows in grandeur, reaffirming the community’s commitment to spiritual growth and the enduring power of devotion.
