Visakhapatnam, a vibrant coastal city in North Andhra Pradesh, offers an exciting shopping experience that draws both locals and visitors from nearby districts. From bustling traditional markets to modern malls, Visakhapatnam caters to all, especially during the festive season when demand soars.

For those seeking an authentic, lively shopping atmosphere, the famous Poorna Market and Nehru Bazaar are must-visits. Here, shops line narrow alleys, creating an energetic ambiance where shoppers can find everything from fresh produce and affordable cosmetics to traditional handicrafts. “Poorna Market has a lively vibe with great prices. It’s no wonder people from Srikakulam to Bhogapuram flock here for festival shopping,” shares Ganishetti Shailaja, a shopper from Srikakulam.

Known for its affordability and variety, Poorna Market serves as a hub for wholesalers, making it ideal for bulk festival shopping. “I buy pure edible oil and fancy items here, which I can’t find back home,” says S. Pankajam, a loyal customer.

For those looking for a more upscale shopping experience, Visakhapatnam offers specialized stores like the Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, famous for its traditional Indian handicrafts. During the festive season, the city becomes even livelier, with stores showcasing ethnic wear and home essentials at great discounts.

However, amid the vibrant Diwali celebrations, awareness around eco-friendly practices has gained importance. This year, local markets are filled with “green crackers,” marketed as eco-friendly. Yet, misunderstandings around these crackers persist. Despite labels, most green crackers available don’t adhere to genuine eco-friendly standards developed by CSIR-NEERI, says A.P.J. Vinu of “Better Kakinada.”

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) is making strides to ensure a cleaner Diwali by monitoring air quality and conducting awareness programs across the state. Environmental engineer Srinivasa Rao emphasizes celebrating responsibly and encourages alternatives, such as lighting traditional diyas.

As Diwali approaches, Visakhapatnam promises a memorable blend of shopping and cultural celebrations, with a growing commitment to environmental awareness. Let’s enjoy the festival by embracing the best of tradition, shopping, and sustainability!
