In a significant stride toward a sustainable future, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled ambitious plans to make Andhra Pradesh a leader in clean energy. During an announcement, Naidu highlighted that 500 compressed biogas plants will be established across the state in collaboration with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). These biogas plants, each costing approximately ₹130 crore, are expected to be operational within three years and provide direct or indirect employment opportunities for an estimated 2.5 lakh people. Transco’s Joint Managing Director, Kirthii, will serve as the project’s escort officer to ensure timely progress and execution.

In line with AP’s 2024 Clean Energy Policy, which aims to attract investments totaling ₹10 lakh crore, the government is also exploring the setup of solid waste treatment plants to generate clean energy from municipal solid waste. RIL has expressed interest in contributing to this vision by investing in additional plants dedicated to gas generation from waste, reinforcing AP’s clean energy mission.

Beyond biogas, the state’s clean energy policy includes support for solar, wind, and pumped energy. In an effort to cultivate a knowledgeable workforce for these industries, Naidu also announced plans for a dedicated Clean Energy University. This institute aims to foster new innovations in clean energy, backed by initiatives like the Ratan Tata Innovation Hub.

Power Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar shared that eight districts in Andhra Pradesh would host these plants, with the first installation set for Kanigiri. Minister Nara Lokesh, chairman of the cabinet sub-committee for employment, noted that of the 2,000 biogas plants proposed nationwide, 500 will be established in AP—a tremendous development for local employment and sustainable growth.

This forward-thinking approach to clean energy and economic opportunity highlights Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to environmental stewardship, employment growth, and a cleaner, greener India.
