Babar Azam Breaks Virat Kohli’s T20I Record, Sets Sights on Rohit Sharma’s Milestone
Despite a disappointing series loss to Australia in the three-match T20 series, Pakistan’s former captain, Babar Azam, achieved a significant personal milestone. In the third T20 match played on November 18, 2024, Babar broke a rare record previously held by India’s Virat Kohli.
Babar’s brilliant innings of 41 runs off 28 balls in the match against Australia saw him surpass Kohli’s record of 4188 T20I runs, bringing his total to 4192. This makes Babar Azam the second-highest run-scorer in T20 internationals, behind only India’s Rohit Sharma, who has scored 4231 runs in the format.
Despite Pakistan’s defeat in the series, which ended with a 3-0 whitewash, Babar’s individual performance was a silver lining. As the opening batsman, he took full advantage of the powerplay and played with a strike rate of 146, hitting four boundaries during his knock. His efforts were not enough to prevent a loss, however, as he was dismissed by Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
This achievement, however, adds another chapter to Babar Azam’s remarkable T20 career. With just 40 runs needed in his next series, Babar could soon surpass Rohit Sharma, cementing his place as the highest run-scorer in T20 internationals. With both Kohli and Sharma likely to step away from the format in the near future, Babar’s path to the record is looking clear.
Babar’s consistent performances and rapid ascent in the T20I rankings have solidified his position as one of the finest contemporary batsmen in the world. As he sets his sights on becoming the all-time leader in T20I runs, his next series will be crucial in reaching that coveted milestone.
