Palestine has expressed its appreciation for India’s unwavering commitment to providing humanitarian assistance, especially for Palestine refugees, by thanking the Indian government for its recent contribution to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). India has released the second tranche of $2.5 million, completing its annual financial commitment of $5 million for the year 2024-2025. This assistance will directly benefit the welfare of Palestine refugees and enable the UN agency to continue its vital work in the region.
The Palestinian Embassy in New Delhi issued a statement on November 19, acknowledging the significance of this support. Palestinian Charge d’Affaires Abed Elrajeg Abu Jazar emphasized that this contribution is a testament to India’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian aid. He also noted that this aid would allow UNRWA to fulfill its obligations toward the welfare of Palestinian refugees, including providing critical services such as education, healthcare, and social services.
This contribution from India is part of a broader, long-standing relationship between the two countries, which dates back to the early years following the establishment of UNRWA in 1949. According to the Palestinian Embassy, India has consistently supported UNRWA’s operations and is seen as a key ally in countering attempts to undermine the agency’s work in the Palestinian territories.
Abu Jazar also reiterated the importance of such financial assistance in light of ongoing challenges faced by UNRWA, which is under pressure from various quarters, including Israel, to limit its activities in the region. He highlighted that India’s support was crucial in ensuring the continuity of UNRWA’s programs, which have been essential in providing relief to Palestinian refugees for decades.
India has been a consistent supporter of Palestine on both political and humanitarian fronts. Over the years, India has contributed $40 million to UNRWA’s core programs, significantly impacting the lives of Palestinian refugees. India’s commitment to a two-state solution remains firm, advocating for the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state within secure, recognized borders.
This year’s contribution continues to build on India’s historical ties with Palestine, with both sides hoping that India’s support will remain steadfast as Palestine works towards achieving its aspirations for freedom and independence.
India’s involvement in Palestinian humanitarian efforts demonstrates the country’s dedication to upholding its values of peace, solidarity, and international cooperation, as it continues to play a significant role in the global response to the needs of Palestine.
