Flowers and fruits hold a special place in everyone’s heart, with mangoes—the king of fruits—and hibiscus flowers being perennial favorites. However, growing multiple varieties of mangoes or hibiscus in a limited backyard space has always been challenging, especially for city dwellers.
But here’s exciting news! Officials from the Parvathipuram Manyam District Horticulture Department have introduced a groundbreaking method to solve this problem. By using innovative grafting techniques, it’s now possible to grow 20 different varieties of mangoes or hibiscus flowers on a single plant.
A New Age of Cultivation
Mango season brings with it a plethora of flavors, including Banginapalli, Neelam, Chandura, Rumania, Malgoa, Sugar Katti, Gir Kesar, Rasalu, and Kolangoa. While it’s delightful to see these varieties in markets, growing them at home usually requires a large space.
Through grafting, horticulturists are now making it possible to cultivate all these mango varieties on a single tree. Small branches of different mango types are grafted onto a primary mango plant. Once these grafted branches mature, each produces its respective variety of mangoes, creating a tree that offers multiple flavors.
The same method applies to hibiscus flowers. A single hibiscus plant can be grafted to produce up to 20 varieties, including vibrant shades of red, white, and even black.
Benefits of Grafting
- Space Efficiency: Ideal for small backyards or urban gardens.
- Diversity: Enjoy multiple varieties from a single plant.
- Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for multiple plants and maximizes land use.
- Ease of Maintenance: Caring for one tree is much easier than maintaining several.
Support for Tribal Farmers
The Horticulture Department is not only encouraging urban gardening enthusiasts but is also working to create awareness among tribal farmers. This innovative method provides an excellent opportunity for small-scale farmers to diversify their yields and increase their income.
