In a move that has left many intrigued, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal recently announced a job offer that breaks conventional norms. The food delivery giant is hiring for the position of Chief of Staff, but this role comes with a twist. Instead of receiving a salary, the candidate selected for the job will be required to pay a hefty sum of Rs. 20 lakhs, with no salary for the first year.
This may sound perplexing at first, but there’s a method to this madness. Here’s how it works: The selected candidate will work at Zomato’s main office in Gurugram, but the company has made it clear that no prior experience is required for this role. In fact, the only requirement is a keen interest in learning new things.
What about the Rs. 20 lakhs? Instead of paying it directly to the company, the amount is to be donated to Zomato’s social initiative, Feeding India, which works towards fighting hunger and malnutrition across the country. In a further twist, Goyal mentioned that if the employee requests, Zomato will also donate Rs. 50 lakhs on their behalf to the NGO.
For the first year, there will be no salary, but from the second year onwards, the selected candidate will receive a generous package of Rs. 50 lakhs annually. The process for applying is simple—no resumes needed! Interested candidates only need to send a direct email to d@zomato.com, telling their story in just 200 words.
The Chief of Staff will work across various Zomato and Blinkit platforms, as well as for Zomato’s NGO, Feeding India. This job offer has stirred up a lot of debate online, with some questioning the rationale behind paying such a large sum, while others believe that there is a deeper purpose behind it.
Whether this unconventional job offer will inspire other companies to rethink their hiring strategies or simply remains a unique one-off, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure—this offer is certainly getting attention.
