ISRO’s Shukrayan Mission: India’s Groundbreaking Step Towards Exploring Venus

India’s space journey, though initiated later than some global space powers like the United States and Russia, has progressed at an astonishing rate. While these countries have already achieved monumental milestones in space exploration, ISRO, India’s space agency, has managed to astonish the world in a relatively short period. Over the years, ISRO has made significant strides, from its Chandrayaan series exploring the Moon to its Mars mission, Mangalyaan, which brought global attention to India’s space capabilities.

Now, ISRO is preparing for another ambitious project: the Shukrayan mission to explore Venus, scheduled for launch in 2028. This mission follows several successful endeavors, including the Chandrayaan lunar missions and Adityayan, an experiment focused on the Sun. The Shukrayan mission aims to explore Venus, a planet often referred to as Earth’s twin due to its size and proximity, but with a vastly different and hostile environment.

The Shukrayan mission has already received approval from the central government, with the necessary budget and permissions in place. ISRO Director Nilesh Desai confirmed the mission’s expected timeline and revealed that it will proceed in phases, much like previous space explorations by the agency. The primary goal of the mission is to explore Venus’s dense atmosphere, rich in carbon dioxide and volcanic activity, and study its surface, which is still largely unexplored.

What is the Shukrayan Mission?
The name “Shukrayan” is derived from the Sanskrit words Shukra (Venus) and Yana (craft or vessel). This mission marks ISRO’s first major venture to study Venus and its unique atmospheric conditions. Venus, with its thick, toxic atmosphere and surface temperatures that can melt lead, presents a challenging environment for exploration. However, ISRO aims to send advanced instruments that will study the planet’s weather, geological features, and surface composition.

A Global Collaboration:
To ensure the success of the Shukrayan mission, ISRO is collaborating with the European Space Agency and other international space agencies. This collaboration will provide additional expertise and resources, ensuring that the mission has access to the best possible technology and research capabilities. The mission will not only deepen our understanding of Venus but will also pave the way for future space explorations by India.

The study of Venus is crucial for understanding planetary atmospheres and geological processes that could potentially inform future space missions, including those targeting other celestial bodies such as Mars. If successful, the Shukrayan mission will be a milestone in India’s space exploration history, establishing ISRO as a leading player in global space research.
