Agriculture News: Coconut farmers have received a much-awaited New Year’s gift from the central government. In a key decision aimed at supporting coconut growers, the Union Cabinet has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the 2025 season. This move comes as a response to the rising costs of coconut cultivation and the growing demand for coconut and coconut oil in both domestic and international markets.

During a Cabinet meeting held on Friday, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the MSP for coconut was revised significantly. For the 2025 season:

  • The MSP for milled coconut has been set at ₹11,582 per quintal, reflecting an increase of ₹422 compared to 2024.
  • The MSP for ball coconut has been fixed at ₹12,100 per quintal, marking an increase of ₹100.

A Decision for Farmer Welfare

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the decision aligns with the recommendations of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The increased MSP takes into account factors like:

  • Rising Costs of Cultivation: The expenses associated with coconut farming have surged in recent years.
  • High Demand: The growing popularity of coconut and coconut oil in domestic and global markets.

Benefits for Farmers

This decision is expected to:

  • Enhance the income of coconut farmers by ensuring fair prices for their produce.
  • Encourage increased coconut cultivation, benefiting the agricultural sector.

The government’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening India’s agricultural economy.

A Growing Market for Coconut Products

With the global trend favoring natural and organic products, the demand for coconut and its by-products has risen sharply. This move is seen as a timely step to ensure that Indian farmers can capitalize on this growing demand while maintaining sustainable farming practices.

As we step into the New Year, this decision brings a wave of optimism for farmers, promising financial stability and growth in the coconut farming sector.
