Stir in Macherla: Marijuana Plant Found in Front of Reopened Anna Canteen

Anna Canteens, once a lifeline for the poor during the TDP regime, were closed in 2019 under the YSRCP government. Their reopening by the NDA coalition government has been met with widespread relief, providing nutritious meals for just ₹5 to those in need. But the recent discovery of a marijuana plant in front of an Anna Canteen in Macherla town has left locals shocked and puzzled.

The Reopened Anna Canteens

Located in front of the R&B office in Macherla town, the Anna Canteen has been operational for three months, serving hundreds of impoverished people daily. These canteens are decorated and maintained with care, often surrounded by greenery. However, among the plants beautifying the premises, a marijuana plant was found growing, causing quite a stir in the community.

How It Was Discovered

The marijuana plant, resembling a marigold plant, initially went unnoticed. However, its peculiar appearance raised suspicion among some locals on Sunday. Upon closer inspection, they confirmed that it was indeed a marijuana plant, with evident signs that some of its leaves had been cut. Alarmed by the discovery, the canteen organizers immediately alerted the police.

Police Investigation Underway

The police promptly arrived at the scene, removed the plant, and initiated an investigation. Officials are working to determine whether the plant was intentionally sown by someone or if it grew accidentally due to leftover seeds dropped by a passerby during the canteen’s closure in previous years.

Government’s Stance on Marijuana

The coalition government has been taking strict measures to combat marijuana cultivation and distribution in Andhra Pradesh, forming a special “Eagle Task Force” to root out its presence. The discovery of a marijuana plant at a place known for serving the poor has raised concerns about the effectiveness of these measures.

Public Reactions

The incident has become a talking point in Macherla, with locals expressing a mix of shock, amusement, and concern. Many have called for increased vigilance to ensure such incidents don’t tarnish the reputation of Anna Canteens, which have become a beacon of hope for the underprivileged.

As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to uncover the truth behind this unexpected and controversial discovery, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining the sanctity and purpose of Anna Canteens across the state.
