Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal Intensifies: Heavy Rains and Cold Weather Ahead for Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam, December 25: The low-pressure area that developed in the west-central Bay of Bengal has strengthened, bringing significant weather changes across Andhra Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system, located off the south coast and north Tamil Nadu, is expected to move west-southwestward and gradually weaken over the next 24 hours.

In addition to the low-pressure system, a surface depression at 4.5 km altitude is influencing weather patterns across the region. Combined with a western trough moving over North India, the system is drawing moisture and causing widespread rains and a notable dip in temperatures.

Rain Forecast and Areas Likely to Be Affected

The IMD predicts light to moderate rains across the state for the next three days, with some districts experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms:

  • December 26–28: South coastal districts may experience scattered moderate rains.
  • Nellore and Chittoor Districts: Heavy rains with thundershowers are likely.
  • Fisherman Warning: The department has issued advisories against fishing due to turbulent sea conditions.

On Tuesday, light rains accompanied by cold winds lashed multiple districts, including Alluri Seetharamaraju, Vizianagaram, Krishna, Bapatla, Eluru, East Godavari, and Visakhapatnam. Coastal areas experienced cloudy skies and significant temperature drops.

Cold Wave Intensifies

The impact of the low-pressure system has caused temperatures across the state to plummet by 2 to 4 degrees below normal. In some regions like Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, Tuni, and Kakinada, the temperature dropped by 3 to 7 degrees, amplifying the chill.

Ports Under High Alert

The third warning signal remains in place at all ports in Andhra Pradesh as rough seas persist. High waves, reaching up to 5 meters, were observed along the Tirupati district coast on Tuesday.

Weather Outlook

The weather pattern is expected to stabilize by the weekend. Rainfall is likely to subside after Saturday, bringing relief from the current wet and cold conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.
