The countdown to Sankranti, the most celebrated festival of the Telugu people, has begun. While the festival brings joy through family gatherings, traditional food, and festivities, it also marks the start of a much-anticipated event in Andhra Pradesh—cockfights.

Cockfights: A Festive Tradition Like No Other

In the coastal districts, particularly the Godavari region, cockfights have become synonymous with Sankranti. Over three festive days, these fights draw massive crowds, from locals to film stars and political figures. Crores of rupees exchange hands through betting, making it a high-stakes affair.

A Cottage Industry of Fighting Chickens

Raising racing chickens has evolved into a cottage industry in the Godavari districts. Fighting chickens are meticulously bred and trained, with their care rivaling that of professional athletes. Sheds resembling “gyms” are set up in palm oil plantations, housing hundreds of chickens. From the day they are hatched, these birds undergo a rigorous regimen that includes:

  • Exercise: Swimming, muscle-building routines, and a unique Ayurvedic oil massage called saka strengthen their bodies.
  • Nutrition: A protein-rich diet featuring almonds, pistachios, figs, honey, mutton, and vitamin supplements ensures peak performance.
  • Breed Selection: Breeds are identified based on feather colors, with popular types like Crow, Setu, Kokkirai, and Peacock dominating the scene.

Betting Rings and Celebrity Attendance

By the time Sankranti arrives, up to 500 betting rings are operational across the East and West Godavari districts. Cities like Rajahmundry, Kakinada, and Amalapuram become hubs for these events, where bets range from ₹1 lakh to ₹25 lakh per fight. Special arrangements are often made for high-profile attendees, adding glamour to this traditional spectacle.

A Science of Its Own

Cockfighting isn’t just a sport—it’s a calculated science. Bettors consider the birds’ physical attributes and even delve into astrological predictions to determine winners. The belief that a combination of the bettor’s horoscope and the chicken’s innate strength can predict success adds a layer of intrigue to the event.

Will the Government Allow Cockfights?

While preparations are in full swing, it remains uncertain whether the state government will permit the cockfights to proceed, given the legal challenges surrounding the practice. Nonetheless, enthusiasts have already begun booking tickets, with anticipation soaring for one of Sankranti’s most iconic traditions.

Conclusion

The Godavari districts are buzzing with excitement as they prepare for this unique celebration. Whether you’re drawn by the spectacle of the cockfights, the tradition, or the festive spirit, Sankranti promises to be an unforgettable experience for all.
