After a low-pressure region formed over the central and adjacent North Bay of Bengal on Thursday, heavy rains pounded the districts of Eluru, Alluri Sitarama Raju, and Parvathipuram Manyam. More “heavy to very heavy” rains are expected over the next two days, according to IMD Aamaravati, following which the system is expected to cross the Odisha coast.

For Friday, the IMD issued an orange alert for Srikakulam, Parvathi-puram Manyam, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, and NTR district, and a red alert for Alluri Sitarama Raju and Eluru districts. Many neighborhoods in the impacted districts were flooded, throwing normal life out of gear and leaving people stranded on the streets. East, West, and Krishna were the worst-affected districts, with highways submerged by storm water.

At the Gubbala Mangamma temple in the forests of Bottaigudem village in West Godavari, where the water was waist deep, over a hundred devotees and thirty shopkeepers remained.
