In a recent announcement, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed plans to consider further reducing duties on properties purchased by women, integrating this measure as a crucial aspect of urban development initiatives. During her Budget speech, Sitharaman also suggested discontinuing the use of Aadhaar Enrolment ID instead of the Aadhaar number for tax-related purposes.
Sitharaman emphasized the need for states with high stamp duty rates on property purchases to lower these rates, emphasizing that this adjustment is pivotal for urban development programs. She urged states to explore the possibility of decreasing stamp duties specifically for properties acquired by women.
“We will support states that maintain high stamp duty rates in moderating these charges for all individuals, and we will explore additional reductions for properties bought by women as well. This adjustment will form a vital part of urban development programs,” stated Sitharaman.
Stamp duty, a tax enforced by state governments on property transactions, is levied under Section 3 of the Indian Stamp Act, 1899. This duty is payable at the property registration stage for transactions involving sale deeds, conveyance deeds, or gift deeds. Stamp duty serves as a significant revenue source for states to fund development projects.
In efforts to promote women’s development, Sitharaman disclosed a budget allocation of over 3 lakh crore for programs benefiting women and girls. To enhance female workforce participation, the government plans to establish working women hostels as part of its initiatives.
