Bajaj Auto, renowned for producing auto rickshaws and motorcycles, announced that it has received approximately 6,000 orders for its innovative compressed natural gas-powered motorbike, which is being touted as a pioneering product globally. The Bajaj Freedom, a high-performance motorcycle featuring a 124 cubic capacity engine, was unveiled earlier this month at a competitive starting price of 95,000 ($1,135). Rakesh Sharma, the executive director, revealed in an interview that 100 units of the motorcycles have already been dispatched to customers. Sharma estimated that the potential market for the Freedom motorcycle spans hundreds of millions of consumers. The majority of Bajaj’s clientele prioritize affordability, with monthly earnings below 40,000, and Sharma highlighted that the Freedom model can save up to 1,800 on fuel expenses compared to bikes of similar size running on petrol or diesel.

Sharma emphasized the wide reach of their customer base, stating, “This customer base is spread across the entire nation.” CNG-run vehicles, being free of lead and sulfur, contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operate more quietly than gasoline or diesel counterparts, thereby lessening noise pollution. Although CNG is more cost-effective in India due to significant domestic production, its lower energy density may necessitate more frequent refueling for vehicles. Initially introduced in regions with a high presence of CNG fueling stations, Bajaj’s Freedom motorcycle is now available for orders nationwide. Sharma noted that there are indications of competitors exploring the development of CNG-powered two-wheelers, marking a pivotal moment in the motorcycle industry.
