India is a country where millions of people rely on trains as their primary mode of transportation. With approximately two and a half crore individuals travelling by train on various routes every day, it is evident that rail travel holds a significant place in the lives of many. One of the key reasons for the popularity of train travel in India is the affordability of rail fares compared to air travel. This cost-effectiveness makes trains a preferred choice for a large number of travelers.
However, with the convenience of train travel come certain rules and regulations that passengers must adhere to. When booking a train ticket, passengers secure a seat for their journey. But what happens if you miss the train you booked and still wish to board? According to Indian Railway rules, if you miss your train, the Ticket Examiner (TTE) has the authority to allocate your seat to another passenger.
There are specific provisions in place regarding how long your seat can remain unoccupied after the train departs. Your seat will not be allotted to anyone until the TTE reaches two stations after the train’s departure, and they are required to wait for at least an hour before reassigning the seat. If your seat remains vacant beyond this time frame, it may be given to another passenger.
In the event that you miss your train, you have the option to reach the next station by alternative means of transportation and board the train from there. Should the TTE have reassigned your seat to another passenger, you can claim your allocated seat as per the rules.
If despite having a reservation, you are unable to catch the train, you can request a refund of half of your ticket price. To avail of this refund, you must cancel the ticket and file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) within three hours of the train’s departure. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of any refund.
Understanding these rules and procedures can help passengers navigate potential scenarios of missing their train and ensure they are aware of their rights in such situations.
