The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved several important schemes that span infrastructure, agriculture, and employee welfare. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided details on these decisions, which are poised to have a significant impact on India’s development. Here’s a closer look at some of the key schemes:
Chennai Metro Phase 2 Gets Green Light
One of the most significant approvals is for the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project. The Union Cabinet has given the go-ahead for this new corridor, which will be constructed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The total estimated cost of this massive infrastructure initiative is Rs. 63,246 crore. The central government will cover half the cost, while the remaining half will be funded by the state government.
Chennai Metro Phase 2 will expand the city’s urban transportation network, easing traffic congestion, and providing faster, more convenient travel options for millions of residents. Once completed, this project will be a major boost for Chennai’s public transportation system, helping to reduce pollution and fuel consumption as well.
Railway Employees to Receive Bonus
In a decision that benefits a large portion of the Indian workforce, the Union Cabinet has approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for railway employees. This bonus, amounting to Rs. 2,029 crore, will be distributed among 11,72,240 employees for their excellent performance in maintaining and operating the Indian Railways.
According to Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, various categories of railway employees will benefit from this bonus, including track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers (guards), station masters, supervisors, technicians, ‘pointsmen’, and ministerial staff. The bonus will cover 78 days of wages, providing financial relief and motivation for the hardworking employees of the Indian Railways.
National Mission on Edible Oil-Oilseeds
The Union Cabinet has also approved a significant agricultural initiative called the National Mission on Edible Oil-Oilseeds. This mission aims to reduce India’s dependence on edible oil imports by boosting domestic production. The government will spend Rs. 10,103 crore over the next six years, with the mission targeting an increase in oilseed production from 3.9 crore tonnes in 2022-23 to 6.97 crore tonnes by the year 2030-31.
This scheme is expected to benefit farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and reduce India’s reliance on foreign edible oils. The mission will also promote the cultivation of more oilseed crops, encourage the use of better technologies, and enhance oil extraction facilities.
Recognition of Scientific Languages
In a move to promote linguistic diversity and preserve the rich heritage of Indian languages, the Union Cabinet has approved the scientific language status for Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. This recognition will enable further research, study, and promotion of these languages, helping to sustain their cultural and academic importance.
Conclusion
The Union Cabinet’s latest decisions reflect a strong focus on infrastructure development, employee welfare, agricultural productivity, and cultural preservation. From the expansion of the Chennai Metro to providing bonuses for railway employees and boosting oilseed production, these measures will have a far-reaching impact on India’s economy and its people.
As India continues to grow and modernize, such initiatives are key to supporting the country’s progress while addressing the needs of various sectors.
