The Rising Trend of Heart Diseases in Youth

Once upon a time, heart disease was commonly associated with the elderly. However, recent shifts in our living conditions, increased stress levels, sedentary work lifestyles, and decreased physical activity have led to a concerning rise in heart diseases among the youth. Shockingly, young individuals have been experiencing fatal heart attacks over the past decade.

The prevalence of heart surgeries in younger demographics is becoming alarming. A growing number of individuals between the ages of 30 and 35 are undergoing bypass surgeries, with the percentage of such procedures rising to 30%. This trend raises questions about why hearts are weakening at earlier ages and why bypass surgeries are becoming necessary sooner than before.

Medical professionals attribute these developments to poor eating habits, unhealthy lifestyles, and a lack of exercise. Dr. Ajith Kumar from the Cardiology Department at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital emphasizes the impact of these factors on the increasing rates of heart-related diseases. The incidence of heart attacks and heart failure among individuals in their thirties has seen a significant upsurge in recent years, prompting the recommendation for early bypass surgeries.

Dr. Hemant Madan, the Cardiac Sciences Program Head at Narayana Hospital in Gurugram, echoes these concerns, highlighting the surge in heart attack cases over the past three decades. Neglecting mental stress, inadequate sleep, and common symptoms like shortness of breath post chest pain can exacerbate heart conditions.

Additionally, hypertension emerges as a significant contributor to heart attacks in young individuals. A recent study published in the JAMA Journal of 2021 reveals that one in four people in India suffers from hypertension, with 30% of them being underage.

To combat the rising tide of heart diseases, individuals are advised to prioritize controlling sugar levels, improving dietary habits, managing stress, and engaging in regular exercise.
