Why Aloo Tikki?
Potatoes, or ‘aloo’, are a versatile ingredient used in many cuisines, and Aloo Tikki is a classic example of how this humble ingredient can be turned into a delicious dish. Aloo Tikki is often enjoyed with chutney or sauce, making it a perfect starter or evening snack. The best part? You can prepare it in less than 30 minutes!

Ingredients for Aloo Tikki:

  • 4-5 boiled potatoes (peeled)
  • 1 boiled beetroot (optional, for color)
  • 1-2 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp chat masala
  • 2 tbsp rice flour (for binding)
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped)
  • Bread crumbs (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • Oil (for frying)

Instructions on How to Make Aloo Tikki:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:
Boil the potatoes until they are soft. Peel and mash them in a large bowl. If you’re using beetroot, boil and mash it as well.
  2. Mix the Ingredients:
Add finely chopped green chilies, salt, turmeric powder, ginger-garlic paste, coriander powder, cumin powder, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, garam masala, and chat masala to the mashed potatoes and beetroot. Mix everything well. Add rice flour to bind the mixture together.
  3. Shape the Tikkis:
Take a small portion of the mixture and shape it into round or oval tikkis. If you prefer a crispy exterior, coat the tikkis in breadcrumbs.
  4. Fry the Tikkis:
Heat oil in a frying pan or deep fryer. Once the oil is hot, add the tikkis and fry them until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Remove the tikkis and drain excess oil on a paper towel.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:
Serve the Aloo Tikkis hot with green chutney or tomato ketchup. They make a perfect snack with your evening tea or a delicious appetizer for your guests.

Tips for a Perfect Aloo Tikki:

  • If you want to make them healthier, you can shallow fry the tikkis instead of deep frying.
  • For extra flavor, you can stuff the tikkis with a filling of your choice like peas or cheese.
  • Freezing the tikkis for 10-15 minutes before frying makes them crispier.

Aloo Tikki is not just easy to make but also incredibly tasty and versatile. It’s a crowd-pleaser that is sure to be enjoyed by everyone. Try making them today and serve with your favorite chutney or dip!
