The Telugu film industry is no stranger to sequels, with stars like Prabhas and Allu Arjun leading the charge in creating multi-part cinematic experiences. Now, Nandamuri Balakrishna, fondly known as “Balayya,” has joined this elite club with the announcement of Akhanda 2, a sequel to his 2021 blockbuster Akhanda.
As a senior actor with a career spanning 50 years, Balakrishna is the first from his generation to embrace the concept of sequels in Tollywood. “He must have found some magic and relevance in the script of Akhanda 2 to agree to do it,” a well-known distributor reveals. This bold move is set to elevate his already impressive career to new heights, signaling a shift in how senior stars approach franchise filmmaking.
The trend of sequels in Tollywood was kicked off by Prabhas with his Baahubali series. After the massive success of Baahubali: The Beginning, Prabhas returned with Baahubali: The Conclusion, which solidified the two-part movie model in the industry. Now, Prabhas is reportedly in talks with director Prashanth Neel to develop Salaar 2, further solidifying his position as a top-tier actor with a taste for grand, multi-part epics.
Allu Arjun followed suit with his Pushpa series. After the roaring success of Pushpa: The Rise, Arjun is set to reprise his role in the much-anticipated sequel, Pushpa: The Rule. This film is expected to create yet another box office sensation, much like its predecessor.
JR NTR is also rumored to be considering a sequel to his upcoming film Devara. Though it primarily struck a chord with Telugu audiences, its potential sequel suggests that top actors are becoming more open to expanding their stories into franchises, regardless of how regional their impact may be.
“More sequels are bound to happen since there is a dearth of new stories for superstars,” adds the distributor. This trend reflects not only a changing landscape for senior actors like Balayya but also the demand for blockbuster narratives that span multiple films, keeping audiences engaged for years to come.
With Akhanda 2, Balakrishna is set to join the likes of Prabhas and Allu Arjun, proving that sequels are not just for the younger generation. The future of Tollywood looks bright with these franchise-building blockbusters, which are bound to entertain audiences and break box office records.
