Film director Aparna Sen and numerous other prominent personalities from the Bengali film industry stood in solidarity with thousands of individuals in a significant demonstration for justice after a trainee doctor was tragically assaulted and killed at RG Kar hospital last month.
The participants gathered at the Mahamicchil, which included notable film personalities and activists, voiced their demands for justice through chants of ‘Justice’ and ‘Halla Bol,’ committing to stay until early Monday morning. Apart from the Mahamichhil, two additional rallies occurred in different parts of the city, one organized by alumni from Ramakrishna Mission educational institutions and the other involving students and former pupils from a renowned convent school, all echoing the plea for justice for the medical professional.
At the large rally that commenced at College Square, Aparna Sen, accompanied by fellow artists like Swastika Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, Chalt! Ghosal, Sohini Sarkar, and others, marched down Central Avenue demanding justice for the postgraduate trainee doctor. Supported by their followers, the demonstrators took over the Jawaharlal Nehru Road S N Banerjee Road intersection, declaring their intent to sustain their protest until 4 am on Monday. They urged a representative from the ruling party or administration to engage with them to address their demands for a prompt investigation and the apprehension of those responsible.
Director Birsa Dasgupta informed reporters, “We have reached out to the administration. We are seeking a dialogue.” Actor Swastika Mukherjee expressed concerns, stating, “While we acknowledge the CBI’s involvement in the case, there are fears of crucial details being suppressed post the doctor’s demise. We seek transparency.” She emphasized, “Our presence will persist until 4 am. Although the authorities may anticipate a slowdown in the movement due to the upcoming festivities, we anticipate a resurgence post the Puja. We recognize the potential impact on small businesses but appreciate their support in our cause.”
