Tamil superstar Suriya has broken new ground in Telugu cinema by surpassing industry legends Rajinikanth and Vijay with an impressive ₹25 crore price tag for the Telugu dubbing rights of his much-anticipated film, Kanguva. This bold achievement places Suriya at the top, as Rajinikanth’s recent release, Vettaiyan, was sold for ₹16 crore, while Vijay’s film GOAT secured ₹17 crore for its Andhra Pradesh and Telangana rights.
According to a leading distributor, “This is a significant leap for Suriya. Kanguva’s Telugu rights have generated massive hype, and it’ll be a challenge to recover this investment given the non-festival release.” The film is slated for a mid-November release, just after Diwali, following a shift from its original October 10 release to avoid a clash with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan.
Suriya’s rise in the Telugu market traces back to successful releases like Ghajini, Veedokkade, and Singham, which were all warmly received in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. However, subsequent projects such as Seventh Sense, 24, and Brothers didn’t sustain his market presence among Telugu audiences. This led to a decline in demand for his Telugu dubbed films, which previously garnered between ₹10 crore and ₹12 crore. But with Kanguva, a tribal-action adventure, Suriya is back with a bang, generating major interest and a premium price for its rights.
The visually stunning posters and action-packed promos of Kanguva have reignited excitement among Suriya’s Telugu fanbase, sparking a new wave of popularity for the actor in the Telugu-speaking states. “The hype around Kanguva has been phenomenal, and Suriya has shown immense growth in his Telugu fan following, especially with his adventurous choice of roles,” added the distributor.
As Suriya positions himself as a frontrunner among South Indian cinema giants, Kanguva’s release is highly anticipated by audiences and industry insiders alike. All eyes are on whether this record-breaking investment will pay off, and if Suriya will indeed set the box office on fire once again.
