An alert locomotive pilot prevented a major train disaster when the Bhiwani-Prayagraj Kalindi Express was abruptly halted after colliding with an LPG cylinder deliberately placed on the tracks in Kanpur. Authorities confirmed the presence of a petrol bottle and matchboxes at the scene, suggesting a deliberate act of sabotage. This incident took place at approximately 8:20 pm on a Sunday as the Bhiwani-bound train was traveling at high speed. Following the event, an FIR was filed, and various agencies, including Uttar Pradesh’s Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the NIA, have launched investigations. Six individuals, including two with criminal records, were apprehended by Kanpur police in connection with the incident. A Special Investigation Team has been assembled to delve into the matter further and explore potential links to previous derailments like the Sabarmati Express incident in Kanpur. Authorities revealed that an endeavor was made to derail the Kalindi Express by positioning the LPG cylinder on the tracks. Evidence recovered includes explosive powder, petrol-filled bottles, wicks, matchboxes, and the LPG cylinder used in the attempted derailment. The vigilant locomotive pilot detected the cylinder on the tracks and promptly applied emergency brakes, causing the train to strike the cylinder and dislodge it from the tracks. The pilot promptly alerted the guard and gateman about the situation. The train remained stationary at the scene for about 20 minutes and underwent further inspection at the Bilhaur station, as stated by Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander.
