The uterus serves many purposes beyond childbirth, and its removal can lead to various complications. Despite its functions, many women opt for hysterectomy due to heavy postpartum bleeding.
On Monday, Bayer, in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government, inaugurated the nation’s first Center of Excellence at King George Hospital (KGH) as part of its ‘Preserve the Uterus’ (PTU) campaign. With Andhra Pradesh having the highest rate of hysterectomies at 8.7%, the two entities signed an MOU in March of last year to collaborate on this initiative. The event included a training session for around a hundred physicians from government hospitals and ASHA workers, focusing on the use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG-IUS), a non-invasive solution for managing heavy menstrual bleeding.
“Our clinical trials with LNG-IUS have demonstrated a 97% reduction in menstrual blood loss over a 12-month period,” stated Shweta Rai, managing director of Bayer’s pharmaceuticals in India. “This device releases levonorgestrel hormone into the uterine cavity, offering effective contraception for up to five years while significantly reducing menstrual blood loss over time.”
Dr. P. Sivananda, superintendent of KGH, emphasized the program’s importance in improving women’s health by reducing the necessity for hysterectomies. He noted that the training sessions are crucial for equipping medical personnel with the knowledge needed to provide alternative treatment options.
