According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Andhra Pradesh experienced a 27% surplus in rainfall between June and August of 2024. The IMD’s report, released on Sunday, indicated that the state received 468.4 mm of rainfall during this period, compared to the normal rainfall of 369.5 mm. Specifically, June saw a 34% excess in rainfall, while July had a 14% surplus.

Among the 26 districts in the state, Sri Sathya Sai in the Rayalaseema region recorded a significant 104% excess in rainfall. Six districts, including Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and YSR Kadapa, received normal rainfall, while the remaining 19 districts experienced above-average rainfall.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, along with the Yanam subdivision, observed a 22% surplus in rainfall from June to August. Yanam received 534.9 mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal amount of 438.4 mm. The Rayalaseema subdivision, comprising eight districts, recorded a 44% excess in rainfall, receiving 391.4 mm compared to the usual 271.7 mm.

Dr. S. Karuna Sagar, a scientist at IMD Amaravati, predicted above-average rainfall for coastal Andhra Pradesh and normal to above-average rainfall for the Rayalaseema region in September. He attributed the increased rainfall to the formation of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal in the past two months.

Local environmentalists have linked Andhra Pradesh’s extreme weather conditions to climate change, noting that the state recorded the highest temperature in the country during summer. Furthermore, the southwest monsoon brought record-breaking rainfall to districts like Krishna, Guntur, and NTR, surpassing decades-old precipitation levels.
