A team of innovative graduates and scholars from Andhra University’s Engineering College has made headlines by developing India’s first indigenous prototype motor specifically for drones. This breakthrough was achieved by Technorama, a startup founded last year and operating under Andhra University’s A-Hub incubation council. Their focus on indigenizing critical drone components, particularly motors, aims to contribute to India’s growing drone industry by enhancing self-sustainability and reducing reliance on imports.

Mentored by Professor Mallikarjuna Rao, Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, Technorama’s new drone motor stands out for its advanced features. The motor seamlessly integrates with Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs), providing enhanced safety, responsiveness, and control — essential for precision operations. It also boasts high torque, allowing for improved maneuverability, increased lifting capabilities, and maximized power output, all while consuming less energy. This makes it a promising choice for extended flight time and overall better performance.

Technorama’s prototype motor has demonstrated impressive results, enabling a drone to reach speeds of 55 km/h. This capability is particularly beneficial in emergency situations where speed and reliability are crucial. Additionally, the motor operates with an efficiency of 92-95%, a significant improvement over the 85-87% efficiency of Chinese motors commonly used in India. Professor Rao emphasized that such indigenous innovations align with the Indian government’s vision to establish India as a global drone hub by 2030. The domestic drone market, currently valued at USD 1.20 billion, is projected to grow to USD 4.87 billion by 2030, driven by diverse applications in defense, agriculture, and healthcare.

The Technorama team’s milestone in drone technology not only advances India’s technical capabilities but also marks a step toward self-reliance in the burgeoning drone sector. This groundbreaking work sets a precedent for future innovation, strengthening India’s competitive edge in the global drone industry.
