The Andhra Pradesh (AP) government is set to launch a comprehensive campaign in each district to combat the influence of cannabis. A dedicated toll-free hotline will be introduced shortly to allow the public to report concerns related to narcotics. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha convened a meeting with Senior Police Superintendents (SPS) from all districts to devise a strategy for preventing cannabis cultivation. During a subsequent press briefing, Minister Anitha revealed that the initiative would primarily target five specific districts. She highlighted the use of CCTV surveillance to closely monitor cannabis cultivation.

To lead the eradication efforts, a ministerial sub-committee consisting of the Home, Education, and Tribal Affairs ministers has been established. Individuals providing information on cannabis-related activities will be eligible for rewards or cash prizes. Minister Anitha praised the Visakhapatnam police for their proactive stance in identifying and cracking down on cannabis smuggling operations. She stressed the importance of enforcing the POCSO Act in cases involving minors.

Furthermore, Minister Anitha emphasized the significance of police welfare, advocating for law enforcement to be viewed as protectors rather than instigators of fear. She pledged to equip the police force with modern tools for drug testing and diagnostics, affirming the government’s commitment to rejuvenating law enforcement. Addressing concerns about officers’ lack of scheduled breaks, she assured that the government would allocate resources to bolster the department with additional personnel, enabling officers to take their entitled leaves.
