In her latest art show, artist Arpitha Reddy captures the essence of Lakshmi, the revered goddess of abundance, while shedding light on the profound connection she shares with Durga, the goddess of strength and protection. Through her portrayal of Lakshmi, Reddy emphasizes how these two powerful goddesses balance the delicate dance between safeguarding and prosperity. “Dasara also acknowledges the symmetry of strength and wellspring,” she says, highlighting the harmonious duality that Durga and Lakshmi represent.

In the Hindu tradition, the divine feminine is often divided into a trinity, or triad, with each goddess embodying a unique aspect of universal energy. Durga represents strength and protection, fiercely defending against the inner demons of fear and ignorance. Lakshmi, in turn, brings abundance and verve, nurturing not only material prosperity but also emotional and spiritual well-being. The third, Saraswathi, symbolizes wisdom, offering clarity and insight that guide us on our journey.

Reddy explains that her depiction of Hari Priya, or Lakshmi, showcases the flourishing life force that sustains existence and fuels prosperity. However, she points out that Lakshmi’s connection to Durga is wholehearted, as the two goddesses work in cosmic tandem. In the grand cycle, Durga’s fierce guardianship creates a protected space where Lakshmi’s nurturing energy can flow freely, allowing for a balanced life marked by both strength and abundance.

This synergy between the goddesses exemplifies the deeper theme of Dasara, a festival that reveres not only the triumph of good over evil but also the interconnectedness of divine forces. Reddy’s work serves as a beautiful reminder that life thrives in balance and that true prosperity extends beyond wealth to encompass spiritual and emotional fulfillment. Her art invites viewers to explore this delicate equilibrium and reflect on the divine feminine energies that sustain and protect us.
