The Bengal Assembly has recently made a significant move by passing the Aarajita Bill, aimed at punishing those who commit heinous crimes like rape and murder, especially against women and children. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been at the forefront of demanding immediate approval from the Governor for this crucial legislation. The issue of perpetrators of such crimes roaming freely in BJP-ruled states has been a cause for concern, prompting Mamata Sarkar to take decisive action to prevent further harm.

The Anti-Rape Bill, also known as the Aarajita Bill, includes provisions for imposing the death penalty on those found guilty of rape and murder, as well as life imprisonment for rapists. One of the key aspects of this bill is the swift justice it aims to deliver, with a promise to punish convicts in rape cases within 10 days. Despite the BJP’s support for the bill, it faced defeat in the Bengal Assembly.

Mamata Banerjee emphasized that Bengal is setting an example for the whole country by implementing stringent punishments for rapists. Drawing attention to incidents like Hathras and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, she highlighted the urgency for immediate action. Demanding the prompt approval of the Aparajita bill from the Bengal Governor, Mamata criticized the Centre for its inaction on enacting tougher laws to tackle such crimes.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made a significant arrest, taking Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, into custody along with three others in a corruption case. The court has ordered CBI custody for the accused for six days. Protests have erupted in Bengal following the brutal rape and murder of a lady doctor, leading to lawyers boycotting courts in Kolkata.
