As Karthika Masam begins in Andhra Pradesh, chicken prices have dropped dramatically. Traditionally marked by religious observance, fasting, and abstention from non-vegetarian foods, Karthika Masam is a month with special spiritual significance in the Hindu calendar. This cultural shift has led to a sharp decline in chicken prices, with rates dropping nearly 50% over the past ten days.
In bustling markets like Visakhapatnam’s Ram Nagar, skinless chicken, which recently sold for around ₹270-300 per kilogram, is now available for ₹200. Raw chicken is priced even lower at ₹160, while boneless is at ₹210. S.K. Farooq, a broiler vendor in the area, says he expects prices to remain low or even drop further as the month progresses.
“This month holds special spiritual significance,” explains Ravana Murthy, a priest at Sai Baba Temple. “Many devotees practice fasting and refrain from non-vegetarian food as part of their spiritual journey.” Not only is this tradition linked to religious beliefs, but it also aligns with seasonal health practices. Dr. Suman Das adds, “The body’s metabolism tends to shift during this period. Many people find it beneficial to eat lighter, vegetarian meals that are easier to digest.”
With prices lower than usual, this Karthika Masam is an ideal time for those looking to save on poultry costs. While demand remains low for now, this temporary shift reflects the cultural harmony between faith, health, and seasonal dietary choices.
