Despite the Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram releasing around 80,000 cusecs of water into the sea downstream, the water level in the Godavari River is gradually rising.

People were drawn to the dirty water that was entering the river from the catchment area of the Godavari upstream as well as locally.

On both banks of the river, people were lining up their bathing ghats and marveling at the rapid flow of the river.

For their own safety, the authorities have advised everyone visiting the ghats to enter the river with caution. Young swimmers, however, took a chance on grabbing wooden logs from woods upstream since they are highly valued. It was possible to witness dead people and snakes moving with the river’s current.

If further rain falls in the Godavari’s catchment areas, water resources officials predict that the river’s water level would rise within the next two to three days. Authorities note that every year from July 15 to September, Godavari experiences flooding, and they are taking all required precautions.
