In a nail-biting finish at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy on Tuesday, India clinched a 3-2 victory over South Korea, thanks to a decisive penalty stroke converted by striker Deepika just three minutes before the final whistle. This victory marks India’s second consecutive win in the tournament, following their 4-0 triumph over Malaysia on Monday.
India took control early on, with Sangita Kumari netting the first goal in the 3rd minute, showcasing India’s aggressive start. Deepika extended the lead in the 20th minute with a well-placed shot following a precise pass from Beauty Dung Dung. The first half saw a dominant Indian team keeping South Korea at bay, allowing them no shots on goal and constantly pressuring their defense.
The momentum shifted in the third quarter, however, as South Korea made a fierce comeback. Yuri Lee scored in the 34th minute, and captain Eunbi Cheon equalized just four minutes later, leveling the score at 2-2. As both teams pushed for the deciding goal, it was Deepika’s calm penalty stroke in the 57th minute that broke the deadlock and secured India’s hard-fought win.
India will face Thailand next on Thursday as they aim to maintain their winning streak. The first match of the day saw Thailand hold Japan to a 1-1 draw, while Olympic silver medalists China defeated Malaysia with a commanding 5-0 win, also marking their second consecutive victory.
India’s attacking prowess and strong defense have set a high standard in this tournament, making them strong contenders for the championship. Fans are eager to see if they can carry this momentum forward!
